Yet another project leading up to next year’s Rise of the Tomb Raider has been announced, and this time it’s a live-action mini-series. Stephen Lunsford, the project creator, revealed the information today on his Instagram account, saying that the mini-series will act as a prequel to both Rise of the Tomb Raider and the currently-in-development movie.

This prequel project joins the recent Tomb Raider novel by Dan Abnett and Nik Vincent and the Tomb Raider comic series by Dark Horse Comics in bridging the gap between 2013’s Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider. The novel, The Ten Thousand Immortals, picks up after Tomb Raider and ends just before the comic series begins. It introduces numerous plot elements that will see their true purpose explained in Rise of the Tomb Raider, some of which include the intentions of the mysterious group Trinity and likely further information on Lara’s potential love interest and rival archaeologist Kennard Montez. The Dark Horse comic series, which will be written solely by Tomb Raider writer Rhianna Pratchett once it starts its new arc next February, takes us from the end events of the novel directly into the events of Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Just how the mini-series will fit into the above chronology of side-materials for Rise of the Tomb Raider isn’t quite clear yet –or whether it will even offer new material and just borrow from the novel or comic series instead. The mini-series is currently in pre-production, and Lunsford says it will release along with Rise of the Tomb Raider.
